Why did you pick this picture?
I picked this piece because it was the first in a series I am working on illustrating the issues people with psycological and emotional disorders go through. The window frame represents the human body damaged and weather worn as the mind goes through a flurry of struggles. This piece in particular is entitled “Escapism” representing ones flight reflex to dealing with external stimuli by turning their thoughts into a way to escape the pressures of real life.
Where did the idea come from?
The idea for my art comes from my personal struggle with depression and bi-polar disorder. I use art as a way to vent my thoughts and emotions. I wanted to have a series of pieces I was personally connected with and this piece was the beginning of that journey.
Why does this art mean so much to you?
This art represents my ability to take my negative experiences and turn them into something beautiful. It also allows me to shed light on how psychological and emotional disorders function
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I have been making art since junior high. In high school I was part of the AP studio program and scored a 5 on my drawing portfolio. From there I went to Midwestern State University where I am now a senior art student going for my BFA as a printmaking major and drawing/sculpture double minor. I love all mediyms, but my favorite has always been colored pencil. I frequently do comissions the most recent of which has been art for the band Allegheny Drive produced by Jarett Reddick of Bowling For Soup. I live in Wichita Falls, Texas and have lived her my whole life. I would like to do artist residency programs at other colleges once I graduate, and I have had a passion to learn tattooing and bodymodification.
What more can you tell us about your art?
I am visually inspired by the works of Matt Lambdin, Matthew Gordon, and several traditional artists including Salvador Dali and Georges Seurat. My art also usually depicts animals in the place of people representing my closeness with nature and my advocacy for animals rig
