Why did you pick this picture?
Although I create a new piece of artwork every week, this one has been one of my personal favourite pieces that I’ve created in some time.
Where did the idea for this art come from?
The character in the illustration is based off of Irisa from a tv show called ‘Defiance’.
What does this art mean to you?
This is actually the second piece in a series. The first piece, which was done some time ago now, has always been one of my favourite works. I was very happy to be able to create a second piece to go with it.
As I mentioned before the portrait is based off of a character from ‘Defiance’; I’ve had some amazing opportunities thanks to the show runners and cast, so creating a new Defiance piece always holds special meaning.
What can you tell us about yourself?
My name is Michaela, I’m a self taught artist from Ontario, Canada. I started Studio of M.M when I was 13. Since then I’ve gone from being known for my 3D papercraft models, to select fanart and now my main focus in on my YouTube channel (youtube.com/studioofmm).
I now use watercolour as my main medium but I still frequently create artwork with coloured pencils as well as still keeping up with my papercrafting habits.
What more can you tell us about your art?
I almost always know exactly what the finished product will look like before I even start to sketch out the idea. I never try to think too hard about what I’m creating; “Happy accidents make work brilliant.”
