The Miner – b.kuhar

Why did you pick this picture?
When selecting pictures to draw, I create a board of intriguing and thought provoking pictures that I have found online or are pictures that are dear to me. This specific picture of the Afghani coal miner, taken by Steve McCurry in 2002, is intriguing in every way. This photo also has a personal significance due to a history of coal mining in my family. The eyes always tell the story and in this photo the miner’s eyes are the most powerful subject and tell a diverse story full of history and emotion.

Where did the idea for this art come from?

I am artist who enjoys drawing. I am always on the prowl for powerful photographs that tell an emotional story and this photograph did just that. This idea to draw this photograph did not come from anything specific but rather from many hours of searching for powerful photographs to draw. When I came across this photograph I instantly knew that I wanted to draw this one.

What does this art mean to you?

On a personal level, this piece of art is special to me. I have had a few people offer to buy this drawing off of me but I have turned each of them away. This art does not only set a standard for me as an artist but is proof to myself that I can in fact create amazing things. As one of the first drawings I have ever done, it is one that I will always have the chance to look at. It will always serve as a reminder to me what a little hard work and persistence can allow me to achieve.

What can you tell us about yourself?

I am a self-taught pencil artist and I am currently a college student and an aspiring filmmaker. In the coming years, I plan to go to film school and go on to direct and produce exceptional films and videos. I am also a graphic designer with experience in poster design and logo design. My pencil artwork is a special hobby of mine. Drawing is something that helps me to separate myself from the ever busy and hectic world we live in. It is a fun hobby I take part in on the side and I constantly love to learn new techniques to make each drawing even better.

What more can you tell us about your art?

Though drawing is my main art form right now, I also have experience with painting, graphic design, video production and mixed media. Art is something I have fallen in love with and something I thoroughly enjoy trying to perfect even though it proves again and again that it is impossible to perfect. I am excited to see what I create in the coming years and am excited to see where those creations take me.
