Submerged – pena_art

Why did you pick this picture?

I picked this picture for it’s use of water reflection and dramatic lighting. Two of the things I enjoy painting the most.
Where did the idea come from?

My idea came from a picture I took a while back of myself half submerged in water. I had never painted water before, and figured it would be an acceptable challenge.
Why does this picture mean so much to you?

This painting means so much to me mainly because it is one of my first attempts at photo realism, something that seemed impossible for me for many years. Ever since I did, however, I’ve fallen in love with it altogether. Looking at this painting helps me remember that it’s ok to take risks in new mediums and new styles. I also learned that so long as you remain patient in what you’re doing, the time you put into a portrait can be worth it in the end.
What can you tell us about yourself?

I’m a self taught artist as well as rising senior from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I’ve been drawing ever since I could hold a crayon, but only started getting serious about art by the time I was in 7th grade. Ever since then, my heart is in the visual arts and will hopefully continue to be in college. I’m also hoping to major in visual arts or even consider a career in Animation. Still looking for what would work best.
What more can you tell us about your art?

My art tends to switch styles from time to time. At one point in my life I was obsessed with using graphite and colored pencils, now I’m currently trying to master oils and hyper realism. Many of my pieces also involve faces, whether realistic or abstract. I don’t think I’ll ever stray away from that, particularly because I love capturing human emotions and expressions on a canvas. I hope to continue this very concept as well as explore new ones later on in life.

"Submerged" Oil on stretch canvas Original artwork by Ella Peña. 16" x 20" I just realized I never posted a full photo of this painting. Ironically, it was completed about a year ago today. Ever since then, I'm astounded yet beyond grateful for the constant attention and positive criticism it has received. From being one of my only works to be hung in more than one professional art gallery and to receive multiple awards, I can say without a doubt in my mind that it's one of the paintings I'm most proud of. #draw #drawing #art #artsy #oil #oilpainting #water #agua #shadow #girl #nina #shadows #canvas #photography #painting #blackandwhite #portrait #blancoynegro #nawden #arts_help #contemporary #contrast #realism #instadraw #artofdrawing #h2o #paint #pintura #swimming #artbravo
