Friends In High Places – skylashes_

Why did you pick this picture?

I picked this one because I feel like it’s the closest to the style I’ve cultivated for some time. A mix of illustrative, cartoonish, realism, and abstraction. I’m a huge fan of animals (pretty girls 😉 and any natural setting. It feels appropriate in that way.

Where did the idea for this art come from?

I really enjoy building enchanting vibes. The sense that the world in the picture is bigger than you can see. This drawing isn’t part of any specific project. I was really just shooting for the “possibility” of one. A ranger / tracker character with a spear in a tree tells a story on its own. The cat watching over her implies trust between them, and her tired demeanor hints that she’s been busy. All of these concepts sort of came to life as I drew it. I’m always happy with a picture when even I have questions about the characters.

What can you tell us about yourself?

My name is Skylar McClellan. I’ve been an artist and a storyteller since before I can remember. Art has always been deeply engrained, and my obsession with stories came from how much I read as a child. As I’ve grown, I’ve had different interests, but my passion for the pen never diminished. A few years ago, I wrote a children’s story called MoonPerson, and surprised my wife with the first copy for our five-year anniversary. Since then I’ve started a publishing company with the goal of getting it out there. I have many other projects in the works, but that one is special to me.

What more can you tell us about your art?

I’m a very firm advocate of branching out, though I have a hard time with it myself. My weapons of choice lean toward charcoal, india ink, oil pastels, some graphite and a few other mediums. But lately I’ve been obsessed with digital art. I use an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, and bury myself in the app Procreate. Since I started working with these tools, I’ve tried to hone my style because I want to be an illustrator for a living. Some of my favorite artists are Vladimir Kush, Alberto Giacometti, Bev Doolittle, and Robert Bateman.
