Why did you pick this picture?
I think this picture demonstrates the real heart of what I do and is a great example of my style. I specialise in line drawing and pen art, which can be extremley time consuming, but at the same time extremley rewarding. This illustration is made up of hundreds of individual lines, each of which add texture and detail to the flowers, giving the impression of movement depth. I love eye catching designs because I think art should be interesting, but at the same time I am a big fan of monochrome art – this picture captures both I think!
Where did the idea for this art come from?
I get a lot of influence from both classical botanical illustration and also contempoary tattoo design, so this is in some ways a combination of the two. I never really plan any of my illustrations, so I just pick up my pen, pick a flower I like and get going.
What does this art mean to you?
To me this art is special because it shows that I do have skill and ability in something, so when I feel like my art isn’t going as well as I want it to be, I look at one of my illustrations like this one, and it motivates me to keep going.
What can you tell us about yourself?
I only really started drawing around eight months ago, and the more I draw the more I love it and want to improve. At university I studied a degree in English & History of Art, which I found interesting, but hasn’t led to a particular career or desire to follow it to a further level of study. I actually started drawing in a bleak period of bad health and life problems, and it gave me something productive to do and a sense of satisfaction in completing a task. One day I would love to have my designs made into mugs, printed on to fabrics, and maybe even create a coffee table book of fashion illustration. I also love tattoo design and custom work, which I would love to pursue further. There is so much I want to see and do, but I am determined to make it happen!
What more can you tell us about your art
My art can change as much as my mood does, and I really love switching up subject matter and style (but generally always involving pen!). I hand draw everything, nothing is done on the computer, except for scanning in my designs.
