Chameleon – songhkang

Why did you pick this picture?

This drawing is one of the first times I started and finished a drawing in one sitting.

Where did you get the idea from?

I was starting to feel rusty and unconfident with pen and ink, reverting back to graphite or other mediums. This piece was a means to get back to handling a pen again. I wanted to create an image using only one line direction, so that the image was entirely dependent on my control of values.

What does this mean to you?

This project is not only a way I got back into using pen and ink, but also as a personal challenge to pace myself. I like to agonize over details. I find great satisfaction in creating a surface of textures, where subtle grays morphs into elaborate floras. …I usually work two or three hours at a time on a piece and move on to something else, resulting in multiple unfinished works or in progress works. For this piece, I gave myself constraints: a time limit of one day and use only vertical lines. With this mind set, I was a lot more efficient with my line work when establishing compositional and value hierarchies.

What can you tell us about yourself?

I am 23 and a recent graduate from Rhode Island School of Design. I was raised in Georgia, and I’m currently working at Laika, a stop motion animation studio in Oregon.

What more can you tell us about your art?

I use my illustrations as a way to meditate (I suppose?). I tend to get really absorbed with my drawings, inching closer and closer until my nose is just centimeters away from the paper.
