Inside Out – _detoxification_

Why did you pick this picture?

I picked this piece because it was my first attempt in drawing realistic human beings. It’s not perfect but I was very proud of the result and it was a turning point in my style and the subjects I choose to draw about.

Where did the idea for this art came from?

I remember seeing a random picture on the internet and thinking about how well a frozen picture can communicate such intense emotions and make you feel something, or reflect something that you’re feeling and that you can’t put into words. I was feeling a little low at the time that’s why I related with it, but I wanted to try to draw it and see how it goes.

What does this art mean to you?

This piece took me some time and effort, and showing pain in it was a first for me, it allowed me to show my feelings somewhere because I normally don’t, I keep them to myself, and on another hand reflect something universal that everyone go throught but nobody talks about, or admit. I also remember paying more attention and observing rain drops on the window of the car, their shape, lightning, .. to be able to draw them.

What can you tell us about yourself?

I’m 22 years old currently studying civil engineering. Art runs a little in the family so it’s a gift I guess.

I took an art class for a couple months when I was younger but learnt only a few things, so mainly I’m self-thaught.

As a child I used to draw a lot of animals, because I was a big fan of animal channels on tv.

Later on I was obsessed with drawing horses, everytime my mind wandered I would find myself drawing a horse, now I relate it with strength, beauty and freedom.
At first I would draw for fun, but this piece was a turning point because it allowed me to take seriously both my art and my thoughts. Now I mostly do random simple sketchs related to thoughts I’m having about everything around me, about things I’ve learned and encountered and quotes I can’t take off my mind.

I’m fascinated by the ability of any kind of art of speaking to so many people and being relatable, moving and influential, and I think it is the most authentic and beautiful when it comes from deep parts of one’s soul.

What more can you tell us about your art?

I am a very positif person, but being very reticent and keeping my negative emotions to myself, art became for me a way of expression and detoxification.

I do the random little sketches frequently, but my best pieces are the ones that I draw when my soul is heavy, when unexpressed feelings and thoughts builds up in me.

That’s when I loose myself in my work and forget that the world exists. It happens mostly in the calmness of the night, with meaningful music which is an important part of the process. I put my heart and my soul in it. Everything I’m feeling comes out and when I’m finished it goes away. It happens only once every few months and sometimes a long time goes by without me being productive at all. I learned not to force it, I do it when I need it the most.
