The Red Queen – artbyjihan

Why did you pick this picture?

I chose this piece because of its simplicity and charm. It shows off the shaded pen detail and tones of red very clearly and gives the Red Queen a harsh yet soft appeal to her.

Where did the idea for this art come from?

Alice in Wonderland is an all time favourite of mine and the Red Queen is a character who stands out for me. I enjoy taking known subjects, in this case the Red Queen, and manipulating them into my own expressive style. I was heavily influenced by John Tenniel’s illustrations where the image is outlined using hatching and cross hatching to create depth and volume.

What does this art mean to you?

This piece doesn’t have a specific meaning however, one could say that no matter how stern or tough you are on the outside, there is always softness from within – which is very fitting for the Red Queen. The exaggerated shaded outlines created by the pen represents the toughness of the Red Queen and in contrast, the watery lightness of the red watercolour paint shows she has a softer side. Both mediums merged together in perfect harmony.

What can you tell us about yourself?

I am 28 and have a BA degree in Art and a PGCE in Post – Compulsory Education. I am a College Lecturer / Course Leader and teach Art, Design and Media to 16 – 20 year old students. I enjoy my job as I am teaching the subject I love and passionate about.

I like to demonstrate traditional and digital skills and share knowledge I have accumulated over the years of studying and practising art to my students during their projects, as it’s refreshing to see how they interpret those skills into their own style.

What more can you tell us about your art?

My artwork is all hand drawn and painted. For most of my work, I do a timelapse of myself drawing and painting to show the progress from start to end.

My specialist skills are in drawing, painting and illustration and the materials I use are pencil, pen and watercolour. For academic drawings, I use pencil, pen, chalk and charcoal. Depending on the nature of the piece, I also use Photoshop / Illustrator to create digital pieces of art but most of the time, I use traditional skills and processes.
