Why did you pick this picture?
I chose this painting because it’s my most recent and I rarely use purple so I am just really happy about it. I also just put it in a sweet pink frame which really compliments it.
Where did the idea for this art come from?
The original photograph came from a colorized photo I came across of generals from the US Civil War. I recently made a few different paintings from these particular photos. I’ve always been attracted to black and white pictures that have been colorized; there’s something dreamy and off about them. Plus the technology of colorizing photographs has really improved since I was a kid and it’s strange to see these moments from history that look like they could have been taken within my lifetime.
What does this art mean to you?
I also am fascinated with these photographs in particular, of generals from the Civil War, because the US is currently experiencing a great divide and polarization that I’ve never seen before in my life. It’s interesting to paint these men, not revealing which side of the war they were fighting for, but just allowing their stoic and bearded faces to sit within a contemporary painting.
What can you tell us about yourself?
I am 35 years old and I currently live in Denver with my wife Sarah. I am a full-time artist focusing on expressive, colorful portraiture. I earned my B.F.A. in painting from Herron School of Art and Design, Indiana University,(2006) in Indianapolis, IN, where I was born and raised.
What more can you tell us about your art?
For the past several years I have focused my time painting people. I fell in love with painting because I love color, texture and the ability to create something out of virtually nothing. I am a believer that ‘art for art’s sake’ is enough. I paint because I enjoy the act and ritual of it, but, more importantly, I paint because I find pleasure by observing and critiquing the end result. I am constantly striving to improve in my craft. My process is painting directly from photographs and I currently work in acrylic, spray paint, oil pastels and ink.
My artwork can be viewed in Denver, CO at Artwork Network as well as HUE Gallery of Contemporary Art (Wichita, KS) and ZK Gallery (San Francisco, CA). Please check out my website by visiting http://www.jonathanmcafee.com
