Why did you pick this picture?
This is the most recent part of a series of small ballerina paintings that all have a bit of fairytale in common. I’m particularly happy about this one because of the combination of figurative and abstract art.
Where did the idea for this art come from?
When I see a photo I immediately get inspired to create a new image by placing a person in a different setting. When I saw the picture that I was inspired by to create this painting, I could instantly see Alice tumbling down the rabbit hole.
What does this art mean to you?
This particular piece of art is as I mentioned before, part of a series of dancers that each have their own unique dimensions and worlds. They are connected by their means of expression with dance forms. As Alice twirls down through the rabbit hole, I expanded my colour palet in the abstract elements of the work since my children inspired me a lot in the creative process of this piece of work. It reminds me of the power of imagination that children posess as they enter a new fantasy world every day. This painting really expresses the fun and exciting side of the new and unknown. It reminds us how we can still find our creativity and that we can discover new depths of our imagination when we least expect it.
What can you tell us about yourself?
I’m 34 years old and live in the Netherlands with my husband and two daughters who never seize to inspire and support me as an artist.
I spent most of my time creating paintings , but I am also a photographer and do some illustrative work.
What more can you tell us about your art?
Most of my recent paintings feature ballet dancers. It has been less then two years since I started painting human shapes, beforehand my main focus was on landscapes. Over time, my curiosity shifted to the human forms when my daugther started her ballet lessons as I was capturing her movements with my camera. Ever since, I have been fascinated with the movement and emotional expression you can see in the art of dance. As for my future aspirations, I strive to broaden my range of storytelling and create several different themed collections that challenge me to experiment with a wide range of techniques. As this collection is based on dance forms, I already started a new collection that incorporates haute couture which will require a lot of detail and texturisation
