The Majestic Up-and-Comer – sydney gruber

Why did you pick this picture?

This piece is a personal favorite of mine, and it demonstrates my practice of alchemy art as well as my signature style. I enjoy crafting mixed media work and regularly move between mediums in the art I manifest.

Where did the idea for this art come from?

I wanted to play with the 3-Dimensional component of making the elephant appear to be emerging from the painting. The head of the elephant is a restored bust mounted to board. His newly painted vibrant ears breathed new life into him; it was a fun project for experimenting.

What does this art mean to you?

Creative expression is like holding up a mirror and encouraging a feeling, a thought, a sense of nostalgia. I enjoy creating my work, and I hope the sentiment shines through. I also hope the onlooker is left with a little sensation of wonder and joy.

What can you tell us about yourself?

I am eager to develop and grow in my craft but very much enjoying living in the here and now. My roots are currently planted at Kentuck Art Center as a Studio Artist in Residence, and I am most grateful to spend my days doing what I love. A blank canvas excites me and empowers me, and I am always looking for new collaborations!

What more can you tell us about your art?

As an alchemy artist who specializes in collaborating with my clients’ décor and interior atmospheres, I strive to create sublime works of art with new life through rejuvenation. I work mostly with vibrant abstracts and transcendent imagery. Crafting a personal panache signature, my body of artwork embodies the recognition of the underlying beauty of layers—the potential—within the energetic hues that encourage joy.
