Why did you pick this picture?
This is my very first New York skyline painting in black and white and by far one of my favorite ones. Many people were asking if I wanted to sell it to them, but I wouldn’t want to do it since this painting has been inspiring me to paint more for the past several years.
Where did the idea for this art come from?
When I lived in Singapore back in 2013, I participated in a contest called “Industrial Landscape in black and white” and I decided to paint a New York skyline as a memory of the city I visited in 2012. Many people opted out for painting factories or real industrial landscapes but I just didn’t want to hang such a painting on my wall at home. And since New York is quite an industrial city, that became my choice. Btw, It took the first place back then.
What does this art mean to you?
This painting means a lot to me as it was the first one I painted of New York, and it has now been inspiring me for 4 years to produce new paintings of different cities, though most of them were actually still of New York.
What can you tell us about yourself?
I’m originally Russian but now based in New York after living in 4 other countries (Germany, Singapore, UK and now USA), so I rather consider myself a citizen of the world 🙂 I did my bachelor and master studies in Economics and Politics and then worked in marketing and business development though I was never much into it. I took several paintings classes with different teachers as a hobby but never really thought of being a professional artist.
However, since my husband and I moved to New York in August 2016, I devoted myself to developing as a full-time artist.
What more can you tell us about your art?
I specialize in painting portraits and cityscapes in oil and acrylics. And since I love traveling, a lot of my paintings are devoted to the places I visited. However, I’m also interested in people, that’s why half of my paintings are portraits. I’m still trying to decide what I like to paint more, and in which style, that’s why you can see most of my paintings being painted in different styles.
According to my teacher, I’m half expressionist, half realist 🙂
