Why did you pick this picture?
This piece represents several angles of why I do what I do. First, I love Tom Waits’ music and I try to celebrate contributions to our culture I love. Second, he picked the photo by Corbijn for me to paint and Corbijn is one of those photographers for whom I paint these to say thank you for what you do, paying homage. Third, he signed it for me to give to David Lynch and his foundation to auction off in their Download for Good campaign and I enjoy giving back as I can with my art.
Where did the idea for this art come from?
As a teenager with too much time and extra copies of records, I was inspired by a school project drawing with white pencil on black paper.
What does this art mean to you?
In the now post-digital age, my work is something tangible around which to gather and celebrate the subject and object of the vinyl record.
What can you tell us about yourself?
I’m sort of ambidextrous, painting with my left, using a mouse with my right. That explains a lot as throughout my life I’ve expressed both a creative and a scientific side, taking art classes since I was 6 and majoring in computer science at university. I continue to express both, doing this art and working on computers for my day job.
What more can you tell us about your art?
I love the connections it can make, the stories it can bring up and the ripples it can spread. Selling directly to customers, creating commissioned work is the most satisfying, making something people can hold onto and share.

"All records are riddles, and whatever you may want people to think it's about, it may just be throwing them off. And you don't want it to get in the way of what someone else's understanding is. It's not really about anything. At the same time, it will find some meaning."
