Death and the Maiden: Wonderland Edition – Michael Zug

Why did you pick this picture?

I picked it because it is a pretty good barometer of where my art is right now: somewhere between whimsical and horrific.

Where did the idea for this art come from?

The idea is originally from Medieval woodcuts featuring the Death and the Maiden motif – which I have been playing with for a few years now.

What does this art mean to you?

It means that while you should take your art and your subject matter seriously – there is no reason you can’t have fun at the same time. There is room to be silly.

What can you tell us about yourself?

I am a simple fellow who enjoys nothing more than spending quality time with my imagination – and seeing what happens.

What more can you tell us about your art?

I am doing my best to combine the complexity of an Albrecht Durer woodcut with the commercial appeal of a 1960’s magazine appliance ad. I am trying to blend my favorite aspects of every era of traditional illustration into one unique style. Hopefully, every once in a while – I manage to make something provocative.
