Beauty in Pain – Zarina Dhillon

Why did you pick this picture?

I chose this picture because to me it seems like the most symbolic of my pictures, and it includes two contrasting forms of art. The mural behind me is still and calm, while dance can be very carefree and expressive. It shows that these two different pieces can merge into a new piece of art.

Where did the idea for this art come from?

This idea came from the mural behind me; to me, there is something so raw and beautiful about a sunset. I chose this pose because it involves a sense of letting go, and expresses the feeling I get when I witness a sunset.

What does this art mean to you?

This specific image is a reminder that it is ok to let go and free yourself; it’s ok for you to let the influence of other artists guide you to discover your own unique style. In addition, when most people think of art, they usually envision drawings or paintings. I think this shows that there are countless ways to create art.

What can you tell us about yourself?

I am 18 years old, and I have been dancing for around 15 years. I am a Principal Dancer with the Antelope Valley Ballet. I have also been to American Ballet Theatre and Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre for the past three summers.

What more can you tell us about your art?Dance has always been a huge part in my life. Whenever anything in my life gets too overwhelming, I know I can use that energy to focus on expressing how I’m feeling in a healthy way. It includes aspects of strength, intelligence, and artistic ability.Dance is so amazing to me because even though there are millions of people who can do the same step, it is never done the same exact way. I love how much I can learn and grow everyday through this art form.To see more of Zarina’s performing arts please follow the link below to see their instagram page Here
