Why did you pick this picture?
There is ‘a pair’ in this picture, they are the same person and also already another person. I chose this one because it shows the basis of my art work that everything is the same but different. I often make pictures for a pair. It is because I want to describe the truth that the two things we recognize as being opposite are actually one existence. Such as, past , present and future, red and blue, purity and maturity, evanescence and toughness, lament and delight…..I draw these things as one. I use a lot of purple and violet on my paintings. Those colours symbolize unity and connection.
Where did the idea for this art come from?
It’s not something only about this work, the underlying elements of my art comes down from ‘above’. It’s quite hard to explain with words. The elements come from above are constructed in a space over my head and when the degree of the construction increases, I embody it in two dimensions. People in this picture are wearing clothes and accessories, it’s just my personal preference. I like to design and draw clothes, but it gives a personality to the people in my art. They are neutral existence. They don’t have a character. So I normally draw people without clothes.
What does this art mean to you?
This work speaks to make me understand what ‘it’s opposite but one’ and what ‘everything is here right now’ mean.
What can you tell us about yourself?
I am self taught. I’m working at a company on weekdays. I had been thinking about studying art at university, but I realized that I’m suited for doing things myself. I started drawing when I was about 2. I was tracing anime characters just for fun, but soon I couldn’t be satisfied with doing it, so I started to duplicate illustrations from comic magazine. Put an original illustration beside the paper and I tried to draw it exactly like the original. I was doing it until 14. I was just enjoying to do it in those days, but looking back now, it was a very important practice to me. I knew that what I have to express in my art when I was a child, but I didn’t know how to embody it on a paper. I gradually came to know how to draw it in recent years. I’m still unskilled, but also I’ve never felt that my skill wouldn’t grow anymore. I am very grateful for it and I will continue to pursue my art.
What more can you tell us about your art?
I primarily use watercolour, but I’m planning to make some oil paintings and also interested in abstract. In whatever form, the important things to me are drawing beautifully and understanding exactly what I’m expressing. My paintings are quite big for watercolour, it takes a long time to complete. I have to make more efforts to be finished more quickly. I’d like to hold a solo exhibition somewhere once the three pictures I’m currently working on are finished. I would be very glad if my paintings are seen by many people. Thank you very much.
