Windmill – Laurens Van Gurp

Why did you pick this picture?

I picked this picture because it really represents my style at this moment.

Where did the idea come from?

I love to draw architecture and always loved these old windmills. I really like how the details worked out in this one, with the tulips in the front and dark sky in the back. It really gives a lot of depth. In this piece I really wanted to represent the Netherlands and what’s more dutch then windmills and tulips?

What does this art mean to you?

This piece does have a special meaning to me, because I decided to live back home again after traveling for over 2,5 years. I never thought I would be away from home for this long and it felt good to be back!

What can you tell us about yourself?

I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. It all started out with just drawing cartoons in my schoolbooks. after finishing high school I studied architecture for a while, but because I just liked the designing and drawing I decided to quit and go to artschool Where i really learned how to draw in a better way. When I graduated I worked for a year and saved enough money to leave for a while, so I bought a one way ticket to bangkok. From there I traveled asia and australie for almost 1,5 year After australie I flew to barcelona, where is lived for a year.

What more can you tell us about your art?

My drawings are really inspired by all the places I visited. A lot of it is drawn when I was there. Sometimes sitting in the streets, sometimes from a picture. The drawings are my visualisation of the beatifull architecture and landscapes that I saw. I usually work in black and white. very small with a lot of details. Lately i take a lot of inspiration from the tattooworld with the high contrast and closed designs. The dotwork is also something I started doing a lot, becaus I love the effect of it, Im working on some new projects right now, so you can expect more to.come;) hope you like it!!
