Fragments – Malena Pillipow

Why did you pick this picture?

I chose to show this painting because it represents emotion in modern issues.

Where did the idea for this art come from?

The idea mostly came out of a couple assignments I did in grade nine art class. The assignments were based around Pablo Picasso’s “weeping woman” and they required for us to illustrate a similar face…. eventually I started doing more geometric drawings in my free time and my drawings became more refined as I went on.

What does this art represent to you?

To me, in its simplicity, its a painting to represent and appreciate black women… while also developing my style onto a canvas

To me it represents black women empowerment and beauty. I wanted to show emotion trough the faces and monochromatic colour. I wanted to appreciate black women because they deal with regular inequality that some people ignore

What more can you tell us about your art?

My style in this painting was developed in range of Pablo Picasso and geometric design. it started off with a study in grade nine art class based around Pablo’s ‘weeping woman’.

After finishing the the study in class, I began to doodle little geometric doodles (with colour) to pass time outside of class. Eventually I started making more and over time I developed, what I could say, was my own style.
