Bass Harbor Sunset – Peyton Vaillancourt

Why did you pick this picture?

This painting comes from a reference photo my boyfriend took while we were camping in Acadia National Park. It was the first time either of us had ever visited and it was absolutely gorgeous.

Where did the idea for this art come from?

The day we visited the Bass Harbor Lighthouse, there was an all-consuming fog covering the entire island. Many people were waiting with us but were frustrated by the lack of visibility. Just as people began to clear out, the sun broke through the clouds, burning off the fog and rewarding us with the most beautiful sunset in my memory. The intensity of the warm yellow light bouncing off the sea stained and weathered rocks was absolutely breathtaking. This event was a subtle reminder of the special moments that can come to those who wait. Patience is a virtue. If we had not been willing to wait out the ridiculously heavy fog, we would have never been fortunate enough to see this beautiful sunset.

What does this art mean to you?

I knew as soon as I saw this gorgeous sunset that I wanted to try to recapture it with a painting. Our trip to Acadia was one of the best adventures I’ve had to date and I cannot wait to return and explore further. Until then, I hope to use the inspiration I got from that trip to create my art.

What can you tell us about yourself?

I am 21 years of age and have lived in New Hampshire my entire life. For as long as I can remember, I have been passionate about nature and have been awestruck by its wonders. As a child, I leapt at every opportunity to be outside and see wildlife. I also thoroughly enjoyed drawing and coloring as a kid, although it was not until high school that I began to take my artwork more seriously. As I have gotten older, my soft spot for the natural world has only grown as I have worked to better understand the ever-increasing pressures on the environment. Expressing my passion for the outdoors through my art helps me feel closer and more connected to the beautiful world around us.

What more can you tell us about your art?

I am in the process of taking my hobby into a more professional realm as an artist. If anyone would like to follow me on my journey they can do so by checking out my Instagram profile or my new website:
