Kid Dynamite – Ashley Coles

Why did I pick this picture?

I chose to do this piece because it contained a level of detail and intensity that I tend to look for in my work. This picture also allowed me to push my limits as far as venturing outside of my comfort zone and attempting to draw more difficult pieces with different elements such as water so that I can get a better handle on perfecting fine details.

Where did the idea for this art come from?

This photo reference that I used for this portrait was from early photos taken of Mike Tyson at a time in his career that perfectly captured the intensity and power that he brought into each and every fight, and that very detail and the challenge to convey this look in his eyes onto paper and re-create it was an amazing experience.

What does this art mean to you?

This portrait means a lot to me because it challenged me and at the same time allowed me to capture and focus on details that I always used to avoid. In total I spent 200+ hours on this piece and at times it was mentally and physically draining; but, completing this portrait taught me a new level of patience and perseverance and to continue to trust the process.

What can you tell us about yourself?

I am a 32 year old self-taught artist that really recently started to take art serious in late 2014 and early 2015. When I was around age 6 or 7 I used to draw small cartoon or comic book characters, but never was good at drawing people or anything photorealistic; however, I wanted to push myself and in the process I discovered how much I was in love with the Contemporary Photorealistic Art style and would stop at nothing until I achieved the style and to create my own style. I love to capture this process via time lapse because it allows me to bring others into my world by allowing them to see the creative process. Being a shy person, art has introduced me to the world simply by letting my art speak for me.

What more can you tell us about your art?

With my art I hope to encourage other artist young and old to continue to pursue the things that they love regardless of the push back. I hope one day to be on the level of other amazing photorealistic artist and create a name for myself as well as always improving and developing myself as an artist. One day I hope that I can help other artist in my position to do the same with much patience and practice and letting my art speak loudly for me and to others for many years to come.
