Toothpaste – John Holcroft

Why did you pick this picture?

It’s one of my favourites and I’m quite proud of it.

Where did the idea for this art come from?

This was for an instagram ad for Marvis toothpaste, I had to do 5 of them to represent the different flavours. This one was for liquorice flavour. I wanted to make it look cool and edgy by having the snake coming out the tube.

What does this art mean to you?

It isn’t very often I get to illustrate an ad and it’s very rare for any client to give to free rein to do what you want. Usually when illustrating on a high profile project whether it’s an ad, a poster or book cover, you have a strict brief to adhere to and other people making suggestions so in the end you get a watered down compromise. So to have the client tell me they trust me to do what I want it was like all my birthdays come at once.

What can you tell us about yourself?

I have been illustrating for 22 years and I make my living taking commissions for publications and selling prints on Etsy and Society6. I have changed my style over the years and continuing to develop with the times. When I’m not working on commissioned jobs I have to create self promotional work to attract new clients, this gives me the freedom to create what ever I want. I like to choose subjects that people can relate to whether it’s about politics, society, relationships or just fun stuff.

What more can you tell us about your art?

I try to make my work diverse and my style adaptable whilst still recognisable as mine. My website only get’s updated once a year so you can see the most up to date on instagram so please check it out!
