Why did you pick this picture?
I really like this piece as this is the first series that I have ever started and completed! It was a fresh approach to art for me, after focusing solely on urban sketching and coursework pieces for quite some time.
Where did the idea come from?
I made this for an exhibition titled ‘Monsters and (I’m)mortals’ where selected pieces should reveal certain qualities of Man. After being super inspired by a T-shirt of mine, I chose to focus on hubris, presenting this character flaw through animals and colour.
What does this art mean to you?
It started off as just an art piece I did for an exhibition; however, as I went along with the process, it evolved into something a lot more personal. If you will notice, the subjects in Red are more docile animals who try to appear stronger, more dominant, or superior than they actually are: as seen here, we have a tuna with a shark’s fin, a sparrow with an eagle’s beak, etc. Being active within my school and my local community from a young age, I do remember the times my behaviour experienced changes for the worse as I experienced small successes, something that I am not proud of. Therefore, I chose to focus on Man’s hubristic tendencies, as it is an emotion that is familiar to most.
What can you tell us about yourself?
I am an 18 year old student artist from Penang, Malaysia. I have participated in multiple exhibitions and conventions, started an artist-in-residence program with a Malaysian resort, and am actively collaborating with organisations such as stray rescue centres and environmentalist organisations to raise awareness through art. I am still struggling to find a signature style, but I do enjoy the process of experimenting, failing, and learning along the way. Some fun facts about me! I once smoked up my room when I experimented with fire in my drawings. I also learnt the hard way that soy sauce and fruit juices do not blend well on paper.
What more can you tell us about your artwork?
I like making my words diverse and my style adaptable. I mainly use watercolours, ink, and graphite, but I do enjoy working with anything that I have, be it pastels, charcoal, acrylics, or even mixed media! I am super interested in combining mark-making with traditional methods; similarly, I have just bought a Wakom tablet to try out digital art! However I can do neither at the moment as my exams are coming up and I have to catch up on schoolwork. Do check me out on Instagram @theyellownoodle, constructive criticism is greatly appreciated!
